Historic Landscape Characterisation

Creating, understanding and applying historic aspects of landscape

Historic Landscape Characterisation data and the North Wessex Downs AONB (April 2012) - Wyvern Heritage has undertaken an enhancement of existing Historic Landscape Characterisation data including completion of glossary, identification of 'iconic' map(s) and a short overview report

Historic Landscape CharacterisationCreating Historic landscape characterisation for the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB - This defined and mapped the historic and archaeological dimension of the present day landscape. This study focussed on the totality of the landscape, providing a broad overview of the complexity of the historic environment in a given area. Mapping and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) played a central role in both the creation of the HLC dataset and in the presentation of the results. The primary purpose of the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB is to conserve and enhance natural beauty. The AONB couldn't achieve this purpose without a fuller understanding of the landscapes' cultural and historic evolution.

The main aim of the Historic Landscape Characterisation was to help the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB to:

  • Better understand the historic elements of the whole landscape of the AONB
  • Raise awareness and understanding of the unique cultural heritage of the area amongst local people, visitors and the wider population
  • Provide a tool for managing the historic environment and the integrated management of the landscape as a whole
  • Inform planning decisions
  • Provide a framework for policy making and research agendas

The Historic Landscape Characterisation dataset was accompanied by a specialist report , was promoted on a dedicated website and made available through interactive mapping.
