Historic Landscape Characterisation Areas

Characterising the historic aspects of discrete areas

North Wessex Downs AONB Historic Landscape Character Areas (April 2012 to Present) - This ongoing project will use existing historic environment datasets (including the AONB wide Historic Landscape Characterisation data) to create a series of Historic Landscape Character Areas with accompanying descriptions. The aim is to feed these into the new integrated wider landscape management 'strategy' and to inform the AONBs management plan review process. The AONB is also interested in developing a methodology for identifying the significance of the key characteristics identified in each area.

Historic Landscape Character AreasTamar Valley AONB Historic Landscape Character Areas (Aug 2011 - Nov 2011) - The Tamar Valley AONB is developing Historic Environment Action Plans (HEAPs) for the AONB area as part of the EU funded INTERREG Cordiale project from autumn 2011. The first stage consisted of the creation of Historic Character Areas for the project area. The result was a GIS dataset defining the areas, with brief accompanying area summaries. Subsequent detailed summaries will be drawn up by the AONB Project Officer in conjunction with a project steering group.

The Historic Character Area approach provides a method of consolidating historic characterisation data, and other sources such as Historic Environment Records into a more generalised dataset based on geographically specific areas.

The work adapted a methodology created for the identification of Historic Character Areas developed for the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB as part of an English Heritage funded project to create Historic Environment Action Plans.

Fourteen Historic Character Areas have been identified and described within the Tamar Valley AONB Service Area.
